Understanding Your CIBIL Score

Priya Sharma15 March 202511 min read

Your CIBIL score is a 3-digit number (300-900) that represents your creditworthiness. Banks check it before approving any loan or credit card application.

CIBIL Score Ranges - 750-900: Excellent — best interest rates, instant approvals - 700-749: Good — most applications approved - 650-699: Fair — higher interest rates, limited options - Below 650: Poor — most applications rejected

What Affects Your CIBIL Score

Payment History (35%) Even one late EMI or credit card payment can drop your score by 50-100 points. Always set up auto-pay for minimum due.

Credit Utilization (30%) Keep your credit card utilization below 30% of your limit. If your limit is ₹3 lakh, try not to use more than ₹90,000 at any time.

Credit Age (15%) Older credit accounts help your score. Never close your oldest credit card even if you don't use it much.

Credit Mix (10%) Having both secured (home loan, car loan) and unsecured (credit card, personal loan) credit improves your score.

Recent Inquiries (10%) Each loan/credit card application creates a "hard inquiry." Too many inquiries in a short period lower your score. Space out applications by 3-6 months.

How to Check for Free - CIBIL website: One free report per year - RBI mandate: All credit bureaus must provide one free report annually - Apps: Paytm, PhonePe, and many banking apps show CIBIL score for free

Check your report annually for errors and dispute them 5. Don't close old credit cards 6. Become an authorized user on a family member's old card
